Looking For A Puppy? - Professional Breeder

Professional Breeder: Professional breeders have puppies to better their breed standard and take great care with their puppies and finding homes for them. They will usually have strict guidelines.
  1. Dedication to producing quality dogs is serious. Has so much invested in dogs that he struggles to break even, not make a profit. Will sell pups only to approved buyers.

  2. Can explain how planned breedings are used to emphasize or minimize specific qualities through line breeding, outcrossing, or more rarely, inbreeding.

  3. Does not breed dogs younger than age 2. Has breeding stock x-rayed to check for hip dysplasia, eyes, or whatever the specific health concerns of the breed may be.

  4. Written contractural commitment to replace a dog with genetic faults or to help owner deal with problem.

  5. Loves the breed and can talk at length about its background, uses, and ideal type.

  6. Belongs to national, regional, and/or local dog clubs, indicating a love for the sport of purebred dogs. Shows their dogs as an objective test of how his stock measures up.

  7. Shows litter and dam in a sanitary environment. Helps buyer evaluate and choose a pup. Explains criteria for "show prospects" versus "pet picks".

  8. Prices will be on the high end. A reputable breeder never profits from the sale of puppies. Does not advertise in the newspaper and probably has an established waiting list for the pups.

  9. After purchase, will help you with grooming or training problems.

  10. Will take back a pup you cannot keep rather than see it disposed of inappropriately.

  11. Sells pets with spay/neuter agreement and on AKC limited registration.

  12. A reputable breeder cares about placing puppies in excellent homes and will often interview potential buyers thoroughly, will make referrals to the local rescue group or other breeders, ask for references and will refuse to sell a dog if the home is not appropriate for the breed or for a puppy.

Questions to Ask Breeder when You Are Buying A Puppy (reprinted from Krystal K Bichons)
Do you have the dam on the premises?

Can we see her in person to make sure her temperament is what we want in a puppy?

Do you own her or co-own her? If you don't own her, who does own her?

Can we see the AKC registration slip of the pup? Have all co-owners signed off on he slip?     (Sometimes 2 different people co-own the dam and both must sign off on the pup's registration)

If you don't have the registration slip on the pup, can we see the AKC registration slip of the dam?     (This is to see if they really have the dam registered with AKC AND to make sure that she was not sold on limited/nonbreeding registration. If she was, then her pups cannot be registered with AKC.

Do you have the sire on the premises?

Can we see the sire in person to make sure his temperament is what we want? Do you have pictures of the sire?

Do you own the sire? Who is the owner of the sire if you are not the owner?

How well does the sire compare to the if it is not a Champion?

How well does the dam compare to the Standard if it is not a Champion?

How old is the dam? How old is the sire?

Has the dam had her hips x-rayed for hip dsyplasia? What is her OFA number?

Has the sire had his hips x-rayed for hip dysplasia? What is his OFA number?

Has the dam had her eyes checked by a board certified ophthalmologist?

Is she registered by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF number is?)

Has the sire had his eyes checked by a board certified ophthalmologist?

Is he registered by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF Number is?)

Do you have any pictures of the ancestors of the sire and dam?

Was the dam tested for brucellous before breeding?

Was the sire tested for brucellous before breeding?

When was the last booster shot for the dam before the breeding?

What did you feed the dam while she was pregnant?

Was this the first litter for the dam?

How did the pups from the other litter(s) turn out if this is not her first?

Did the breeder have the dew claws removed from the pups? (Some breeders do and some don't)

What shots have the puppies had?

    Where were the pups born?

Where were they kept after they were born?

What was the daily routine in caring for the pups?

Were the pups handled a lot or only occasionally?

Were the pups exposed to different experiences and stimuli?

Was someone at home during the day with the pups?

What age do you sell the pups?

    Were they temperament tested?

Was the dam or sire ever temperament tested?

Have any other litters by the dam been temperament tested?

What do you recommend I feed the pup?

What do you recommend I feed the adult dog and at what age should I switch?

What if I buy the pup and in 7 days it gets sick? What is your guarantee?

    Do you have a contract?

Do I have to spay/neuter a pet quality dog? (A responsible breeder will insist on this) At what age?

What is the difference between your pet and your show pups?

If I'm having any problems, can I call you anytime for advice?

What if something happens and I can no longer keep the dog? What do you recommend I do?

Do you have any care sheets or information that you give to new owners?

Are the pups trained to sleep in a crate when they leave your house?

Do you get your non breeding stock OFA'D?

Do you get all your breeding and non breeding stock CERF'D ? At what age did you first get them tested? Do you do the testing each year?

Some breeders put the right of first refusal in their contract. Do you do that also? (This means that if buyer can't keep it, they must call the breeder FIRST before they do anything else)
